The Debate Club

The Debate Club have had a wonderful start to the year, in addition to our weekly meetings where we host friendly debates on issues such as “Should Irish be a mandatory school subject” and “Italian food is the best in the world”, we have also had the opportunity to compete in formal competitions.

DCU’s Debating Society came to the school to give us some tips and tricks, and then invited us to compete against other local schools. We saw success at both Junior and Senior level, with Conn and Jack coming in second place overall for the Seniors, Max and Thomas placing second for the Juniors, and Joel winning an award for individual speaker. Some of the topics included “Marvel vs DC” and “Parents should be held responsible for the mistakes of their children”.

Our senior team have also seen success in the Concern Debates. They won their first round debate, defeating the motion “Misinformation is the biggest threat to peace in 2025”. The result of their debate on “fast fashion” is due soon, so fingers crossed!

We are always welcoming new members, so if you want to get involved we meet in Room 2 every Wednesday at lunchtime.
