The Student Council was delighted with the return of our school-wide International Day this year. We began the day with a Fair Trade Treats breakfast, where students enjoyed fruit, chocolate and tea and coffee from Fair Trade producers. The message of the event was to be conscious consumers and buy ethically-sourced products when possible, supporting farmers around the world.
Students then set up their stands in the hall. From England to Estonia, and Brazil to Bangladesh, 31 countries were represented, with the hall transformed in an explosion of colour between flags and posters. Traditional Irish music mixed with Bollywood beats to create a fantastic atmosphere, and the Canadian hockey stick and cricket bat showed off the sporting traditions that unite us all.
The highlight as always, was the food and drink! Spicy, sweet or sugary, there was something for everybody, all washed down with Scottish Iron Bru or Kenyan tea.
The students were encouraged to chat to their peers about the country they represented, and learn about the culture, history, politics and landmarks of that place. It was an enjoyable and educational day for all involved.
We cannot thank the students and their parents and guardians involved enough - the day wouldn’t be the same without their input. We love seeing so much of our school’s culture represented. We invite everybody to celebrate with us again next year!
